Building the Evidence for Better Decision Systems

Decision Architecture™ is an emerging organisational discipline concerned with a fundamental question:

How can organisations deliberately design the systems through which better decisions are made, governed, executed, and continuously improved?

Following the publication of Decision Architecture™ — The Foundational Paper, this research programme is dedicated to developing, testing, challenging, and refining the conceptual and empirical foundations of the discipline.

The objective is not to prescribe a universal model for decision-making.

It is to build the evidence required to understand what makes organisational decision systems effective, under what conditions, and why.

Organisations do not make decisions in isolation.

Decisions emerge from systems of authority, information, incentives, governance, accountability, escalation, timing, and feedback.

Decision Architecture™ proposes that the quality of organisational performance is therefore influenced not only by the quality of individual decision-makers, but also by the architecture within which those decisions are made.

This proposition forms the starting point of the research programme.

The task of research is to determine where it holds, how it can be measured, where its limits lie, and how organisational decision systems can be improved.

From Beverage Performance Drift to Decision Control

A retrospective operational case examining how recurring beverage performance issues in a high-volume hotel F&B environment were traced beyond execution and reframed as a decision-system problem.

The case applies Decision Architecture™ as a diagnostic lens across decision visibility, ownership, authority, protection, execution, feedback and organisational learning.

Research Mission

The mission of the Decision Architecture™ Research Programme is to develop a rigorous and cumulative body of knowledge about how organisational decision systems are designed, how they operate, and how they influence execution and performance.

The research moves beyond the analysis of isolated decisions to examine the organisational conditions that shape decision-making over time.

Particular attention is given to decision rights, decision triggers, governance, accountability, escalation paths, feedback loops, decision latency, Decision Debt™, and the interaction between human judgment, data, and technology.

The programme seeks to connect conceptual development with empirical investigation and real-world organisational practice.

Decision Architecture™ Diagnostic Framework

A developing diagnostic methodology for examining how critical organisational decisions are triggered, authorised, escalated, executed and learned from.

How can decision latency be identified, measured, and reduced without compromising judgment or control?

These domains are not independent components. They form an interconnected system through which organisational decisions are shaped and translated into action.

The research programme is therefore designed to evolve through multiple and complementary forms of inquiry, allowing propositions to be examined across different organisations, industries, decision environments, and levels of complexity.

Developing and refining the theoretical foundations, constructs, definitions, and relationships that constitute Decision Architecture™ as an emerging organisational discipline.

Empirical Investigation

Examining how organisational decision systems operate in practice through qualitative and quantitative research, including case studies, comparative analysis, interviews, organisational data, and longitudinal observation.

Measurement & Validation

Developing methods and indicators capable of examining constructs such as decision latency, decision clarity, escalation effectiveness, feedback quality, and Decision Debt™, and testing their relationship with organisational outcomes.

Applied Research

Studying Decision Architecture™ within real organisational environments to understand how decision systems behave under operational pressure, uncertainty, complexity, and changing conditions.

The purpose is not to seek evidence that confirms Decision Architecture™, but to subject its propositions to systematic investigation, challenge, refinement, and, where necessary, revision.

Hospitality as an Applied Research Context

Decision Architecture™ emerged from sustained observation of organisational decision-making within hospitality operations—environments characterised by high decision frequency, operational interdependence, time pressure, fluctuating demand, and continuous interaction between people, data, and execution.

For this reason, hospitality provides an important applied research context for the early investigation of Decision Architecture™.

Operational environments such as hotels, restaurants, and multi-unit hospitality organisations make it possible to examine how decision rights, triggers, escalation paths, accountability, feedback loops, and decision latency interact under real operating conditions.

Hospitality, however, is not proposed as the boundary of the discipline.

Its ambition is not simply to describe how organisations make decisions, but to understand how better decision systems can be deliberately designed.

A central objective of the research programme is to investigate which principles of Decision Architecture™ may be transferable across industries and organisational contexts, and which remain dependent on specific operating environments.

Current Research Agenda

Following the publication of Decision Architecture™ — The Foundational Paper, the research programme enters its next phase: moving from conceptual foundations toward systematic investigation, measurement, and applied validation.

The current research agenda is organised around a series of interconnected priorities designed to progressively strengthen the theoretical and empirical foundations of the discipline.

1. Construct Definition & Theoretical Development

Further defining the core constructs of Decision Architecture™, clarifying their boundaries, relationships, and potential mechanisms of influence within organisational systems.

2. Decision System Mapping

Developing approaches for identifying and mapping how decisions actually move through organisations—including authority, information flows, decision triggers, escalation paths, accountability, and feedback mechanisms.

3. Measurement Development

Exploring measurable indicators for constructs such as decision latency, decision clarity, escalation effectiveness, feedback quality, and Decision Debt™, with the objective of enabling future empirical testing.

4. Applied Case Research

Developing structured organisational case studies to examine how Decision Architecture™ operates under real conditions and to identify patterns, limitations, contextual differences, and potential causal mechanisms.

Comparing decision architectures across organisations, functions, industries, and operating environments to investigate which principles may be generalisable and which remain context-dependent.

The next phase focuses on construct refinement, measurement development, empirical investigation, applied case research, comparative analysis, and critical evaluation across different organisational contexts.

The concepts and propositions presented within the research programme should therefore be understood as part of an evolving body of knowledge—open to testing, challenge, refinement, and revision as evidence develops.

The objective is not to protect a framework from criticism, but to build a discipline capable of withstanding it.
